I chose the topic of Relationships, Dating etiquette based on gender, because as a 20 year old female in college, who has never been in a serious relationship, (one that has lasted over 3 months!) dating is a major part of my life. What further urged me to do this topic was the movie He’s Just Not That Into You. I found myself sitting through that movie, saying “oh my god I so do that” atleast once every 5 minutes. Not to mention, every single girl I know who has seen that movie also relates deeply to it. The dating world is just so completely stereotypical, that I thought it would be interesting to research the basic differences between men and women while dating.I basically support every detail found on my page, being that it’s so stereotypical and I have lived through these situations so many times, that it’s kind of hard not to agree with them. The textbook helped a good deal with this project, mainly Chapter 9, which deals with relationships between the genders. I got a good deal of information and ideas for the Wiki page, straight out of the text book.My first sources of research came from the book "He's just not that into you," which the movie mentioned above was based off of. I found a lot of idea's in this book which verified the thoughts I already had in mind to do this Wiki page. But I wanted academic sources that would back up the stereotypical assumptions that I have formed based of reality, and movies. Therefor, I searched academic journals in order to find information regarding dating in heterosexuals. During this search, I found a study conducted by Suzanna Rose of the University of Missouri-St. Louis, and Irene Hanson Frieze of the University of Pittsburgh. Their study helped them to create what is known as a dating script. Similar to a script in a play, the dating script outlines the expected behaviors of a man and a woman based on the first date. The script outlined 19 behaviors for women, and 27 behaviors for men.Our textbook, has a more up to date version of this script, being that the above study was conducted in 1989. In the more modern script, the 19, and 27 behavior expectations are condensed into four short sentences, which tell us: * Feminine women and masculine men are desirable * Men should initiate, plan, and direct most activities in a relationship * Women should facilitate conversation, generally defer to men, but control sexual activity * Men should excel in status and earning money, and women should assume primary responsibilities for the relationship. If you review the script from 1989 on my Wiki Page, you will notice just how well the modern script above, found in Chapter 9 of the textbook, is a well put summary of the longer 1989 script. If I were to continue this project, it’s relatively easy to decided what the direction of part two would be. Part two after dating! Marriage! Why does a woman take the man’s last name, why does the man propose to the woman, etc. Originally I had thought of incorporating this into my page, but it would have gotten to be far more than I can handle!I hope you enjoy my page!!
Rhiannon, gender issues follow us to the dating scene as well. Why is it that men feel they have to choose us as if we’re not capable of knowing who we want to go out with? Is it a control issue? I guess your suppose to like him if and I mean if he likes you because he chose you. I believe it all boils down to her self worth to put up with such nonsense. I assume that someone instilled in her that she must find a man, and hopefully the man of her dreams before her biological clock runs out and that’s probably the reason she settles for this behavior. Let me tell you a secret, a women can actually have any man she fancies if she knows what she wants. Now, can you see where I’m going with this? She doesn’t know what she wants and that’s why she have to go through the process of elimination with a man, as you have illustrated in your project. All of the books the women are reading about relationships states that society views the dating game as that, a game men are using to try on women like they try on a new pair of shoes. Men really do know what they are looking for and are willing to try every girl who consents to find the one. A women is just the opposite, she will accept the one man who shows interest in her, that you demonstrated in your film clip” He’s just not that in to you”
The gender issues in this topic are quite accurate. Communication is the key, and the lack of it is the cause of women expecting one thing and men another. Women seem to take relationships to heart because they are looking for love and therefore fall in love faster than men, as stated in the text book under the meaning of personal relationships. Women are better at relating to others, men’s style of building and maintaining relationships is inadequate and less skilled in developing and sustaining personal relationships. I have learned from your project that men like to chase. I had no idea of this fact; this is new to me, very interesting. I can identify with the fact that it’s not personal.
The topic relates to gendered styles of friendship that men and women have different dating styles. The book connection to the topic depicts a women tends to engage each other face to face, whereas men usually interact side by side, meaning women are more likely than men to communicate directly and verbally with each other to share themselves and their feelings, whereas men engage in activities that do not involve facing each other.
You showed this in the film clip with Drew and the guys in front of the phone. Julia would say that you captured the essence of the information on relationships in chapter 9, and she would also say that you confirmed in your project that her research is accurate because the information written is being portrayed in books and it’s also being played out in movies.
The message is clear that men want to control the dating scene but I believe the dating scene is being swayed in a different direction. Women are more familiar with the boys now, as Rhiannon says through books and movies and because of this knowledge; women are a little more in control of the relationship game. It would be interesting to see how men will be dealing with this new attitude from women in the future

How did I end up wanting to research gender issues in the world of advertising and marketing? In a word, awareness. This Gender and Communications course caused me to start doing double-takes on everything from social interactions with the opposite sex, to television shows and those never ending product ads. I never realized how much we are bombarded with advertisements that reinforce gender roles and I decided to take a historical look at this topic to see just how much progress has been made. Much to my disappointment, I realized four things: 1.) Although women control more and more of the family income in today’s society, not that much has changed in the way women are marketed to. 2.) Fundamentally, not that much has changed in the way women are portrayed in advertising. 3.) Sex has always and still does sell. 4.) How none of this bothered me, that is until this class.
Since advertisers need to sell their products to people that can actually buy them, I first researched at where the “buying power” was in a typical married couple household during the past 60 years. It was interesting to see how marketing to men was actually done through women when they did not necessarily bring in the income, but could obviously influence a man’s purchasing decisions. However, the way advertisers went about this was to define women in very subservient roles in order to make their housework easier and avoid conflict. From my research, I found that as the decades rolled on, not only did women bring in more of the total pie of family income, but they also started to take over a lot more of the buying decisions within a household. Although a few companies went directly after a woman’s ability to decide for herself in the late 60’s and 70‘s, most advertising gurus did not seem to get it (and still do not). As unlikely as it seems, even today not that much has changed in the way women are marketed to and portrayed in advertisements.
This topic related tour text Gendered Lives, specifically Chapter 11 – “Gendered Media” that discussed Gendered Messages in Advertising. I would like to think Julia T. Wood, would agree with my opinion, especially since I was able to support my ideas with concrete statistics. I could actually see her including my section on the Virginia Slims advertising campaign in this chapter in a future edition as one of those Info Boxes located throughout the book, and how it tried to capitalize on the feminist movement to sell cancer sticks.
A perfect follow-up to this project would be to do current research on the advertising industry for a period of time and try and determine the following: 1). What is the perceived total buying potential of women in the US (by the advertisers)? 2). What is the current real total buying potential of women in the US (actual)? a). Their income b). The portion of the husband’s income they control 3). Are there specific groups of products (or industries) that seem to be marketed to women better than others? 4). Do activists, feminists and watch dog groups have any influence on advertisers? As part of my research, I would include interviews with marketing executives, advertising firms, women, and those involved in with organizations trying to fight the negative portrayals of women in media.
Mario, in response to your reply.
Male bashing wasn’t my intention when I noted this cover in my introduction. It’s not personal, the point you obviously missed is the fact that people do not see what’s around them, and the point to the illustration is insulting to women by naming the movie Scent of a Women, would you say this is stereotyping? My statement wasn’t male bashing, my statement is stating the obvious, that men are around women and only see their physical being, that’s what my statement meant, men seem to forget at their convenience that there’s more to women than meets the eye. I believe care was taken when I wrote the introduction. If you can’t handle the truth, then so be it, but then again that’s why women are beginning to stand on their own two feet in all areas of their lives, it’s because of misinterpretations like this. You have to see both sides of the issue. What if the cover read (Scent of a Man), what would you say to that?
Mario, try harder to get out of your own way and see beyond your own experience which is clearly evident. I feel you missed the mark in interpreting my writing. Your interpretation of my work is clearly off the mark. You’re comparing the Athletes pictures and the sport they’re participating in, and the fact of the matter is, I’m comparing and shedding light on their salaries. Look at the heading “Gendered Salaries, Men vs. Women”. Then you stated Julia Wood wouldn’t think sports would be a good barometer for gender differences, your right, you stated maybe your wrong. YOU ARE.
And as far as my academic resources are concerned, the ones you thought were needed, they weren’t and that’s why this is Sky’s project, not mario’s project, some of us only know how to quote academic sources and some of us use our creative resources along with our academic resources. If you feel more academic resources are needed then when it’s your turn to illustrate a project on gendered salaries, you can construct it the way you want to. The same way you constructed your project you chose to use what you thought would get your point across, SO DID I.
Mario, what I truly enjoyed about this class is, one person’s opinion isn’t the only determinant of the issues, oh there’s something else, and being considerate concerning a fellow student’s work is the premise of the class, read your syllabus

Should professional women athletes be paid the same as men? My answer to this question is "YES" without a doubt. Sports have become arguably the single most important institution in our nation. They have over come issues of race, colour and class. However, one area that faces continual struggling is that of gender equality. More especially, areas of concern include male and female athlete marketing, perceptions, and pay. The inequity is visible in Golf, Tennis, Basketball, and car racing in which I have demonstrated in my project. I have illustrated the gender gap in wage earnings that has always been considered accepted by society because it follows the norm," men earn more money than women."
Times have changed in the world of sports, Sports Illustrated declared the Sportsman of the year were Sportswomen: this doesn't change the fact that women earn a fraction of the salaries of men. "The reality is women are paid far less than the men in a sport where the gender gap exist for the simple fact that men are bigger, stronger and sometimes faster than women "and therefore feel they are entitled to higher pay. Let's consider the entertainment value of a women, I believe people in general would rather see a women athlete perform than a man; this fact alone should close the gender gap in wage earrings. The Women's Sports Foundation agrees that inequality is visible in every sport. Here's an example of the wage gap, the total prize money for the LPGA was $50 million compared to the PGA tours of 256 million. Women's sports have come a long way and I have demonstrated through the wage gap that they still have a long way to go. The numbers actually speak for themselves.
I chose this project because equality is the real issue between men and woman. I have always had an interest in equality. Personally I feel men and woman should earn the same salary for doing the same work and their sex should not determine a wage gap. I experienced this first hand; I worked for a corporation where men reigned supreme. Women worked harder than men and men received more pay. I wanted to do this project to inform people about the vast difference in salaries between men and women athletes because it's time to bridge the gap. Another reason this project was chosen is for the mere fact that women are making progress as wage earners and men are loosing ground, this progress symbolizes the direction the salaries are heading in.
The Women's Rights Movement in 1840 to 1925 fought for equality for women, if women today do not continue to fight for their own rights then the information that Julia T. Woods wrote in her book on their behalf, would have then fallen on deaf ears. I believe Julia would say that we have a lot in common because we are both informing women about their gendered differences and their equal rights as women.
I would continue this project by using Biological, Cognitive and Cultual Analysis on male and female athletes to monitor and address their Marketing strategies, Perceptions and Pay.

Cherie, I am glad that you are becoming aware of your surroundings, It’s very important that people pay attention to every area of their life and the lives of those close to them, especially pay close attention to gender issues in the different venues. You stated role reversal is running rampant because the responsibility of the household has increased because of the information age along with more wants and needs by the individuals that reside in the household. Shared duties are a must along with cooperation from all in the household. The stakes are higher now because the economy is dictating to the bread winner that more is required and we need participation from everyone involved in the household. The economy doesn’t discriminate, the days of allowing someone else to carry the weight has past. Cherie you mentioned that studies show that women are staying home the first years of their child’s life, I believe that they left out an important point, that they are in a high income bracket and that they can afford to do that because one income is enough to live off of.

Shaina,
Camp with the little one's is a great way to spend your summer because they seem to keep you amused by the incredible words they use and the different things they do. You spoke of the responsibility of the parents which is usally a given. I say that because gender roles that have already been established usually dictates your position in life, especially in Mother, Father roles which leads us to our identities. The Motherly instincts you speak of is inherited to women at birth, the day she was born a female. A women's nurturing spirit and personal knowledge about the opposite sex allows her to fulfill her expected role.Because women take care of the personal needs of the child that responsibility even extends to the childs classroom at school.Taking kids to school just isn't masculine enough for a man, even when the child belong to him. I have a perfect example of gendered roles in parenting. My brother has two sons, a 3 year old and a 1 year old. One morning the 1 year old woke up calling daddy, daddy and the 3 year old heard him calling for his dad. The 3 year old said, no don't call daddy he won't come call mommy, then the 1 year started calling mommy, mommy. This is a perfect example of the expected gendered roles that people play.

Communication in society influences our understandings of gender and our gendered idenities" as stated on (pg. 65) in our text book, answers the question, are men's movements serving valuable purposes in our society? There is always room for improvement especially when addressing issues of masculinity and femininity. Once again the boys and girls of all ages are fighting verbally and physically about their rights. Do you think body parts has something to do with it? or is it the different roles they play or the rights that are not being sharing?Julia T. Woods point in chapter 3. This is the premise of the Women's Movements that began in the 1960's that targeted the rights of women, that I feel was desperately needed. Women have fought for equal rights, roles and opportunities through different movements that would address the issues of concern. The Women's right movement on (pg. 67) addressed women's political rights. The Women's Liberation Movement that protested and fought for civil rights, doing the same work as men and wanting to be treated as peers and not subordinates as stated under Radical Feminism then Reproductive Rights followed (pg. 71). Lesbian Feminism, rejection of male dominance and sexual exploitation of women (pg. 74) . The list of movements goes on and on naming causes that allows a women the forum to express her true potential, evidently it's the potential a man had no idea she had.
Now I find it interesting that the organizations that cater to men such as NOMAS, the National Organization for Men Against Sexism offers guidance in becoming more feeling and sensitive. (pg. 97) in the text book. Are you kidding? I see now why women formed movements, it's to get their point across about issues that concerned them which ties this statement back to the beginning paragraph, "communication in society influences our understandings of gender and our gendered identities"
The men's movements seem to be geared toward coping with the masculine side of their being. In how many ways does a man have to prove he's a man? this doesn't always have to be portrayed through his physical strength, Did he not get the memo? evidently not.

Sarah, I understand your concerns, that's funny you mentioned " It's a man's world" now Sarah you know that everything is centered around a man or haven't you heard? They have been ruling the planet since the beginning of time. A man was here on earth first and the women followed and that's why he thinks he's superior over her and reminds her of this fact everyday through his thoughts, words and deeds. Sarah did you know that he's the ultimate decision maker? that's why he is the one the people call on to solve their problems, it's a given. Sarah hang in there, their power will be transferred to you eventually because their attention span will let them down and send them in another direction, and as usual "You" being a woman will be there taking over where they left off. Does this sound familiar. Here's the reality of the situation, you are probably still feeling the reprocussion of your last stay in the electronic and appliance industry or establishment, and you will find gender issues that can be solved by you eventually, give it time. The only reason people want to speak to a man is, they feel that they have a better chance of getting what they want from them. Don't take it personally and welcome back to the working world.
